Abstract:

It is crucial to adopt effective seismic measures for dam construction using coarse tailings via theupstream method in strong seismic regions, so as to ensure the safety of tailings pond. A tailings pond designed with aseismic intensity of IX degrees has been operating safely for many years. Due to topographic constraints, the upstreammethod was employed in later stages to increase height and capacity to meet mine production demands. Based on theengineering and geological conditions and design scheme for capacity expansion, a finite element model of a typicalcross⁃section was established. Using parameters obtained from dynamic triaxial tests of tailings and silty clay, thedynamic characteristics of the current and final design tailings pond under strong seismic actions were analyzed. The effectiveness of the designed seismic measures and the safety stability of the dam were investigated. Results showthat the adopted seismic measures are effective and reasonable. The research outcomes can provide a scientific basisfor seismic measures during the operation of tailings pond and serve as a reference for similar projects.
