Abstract:

Ferromagnesian minerals can react with CO2 under natural conditions to form stable carbonate minerals, which is a safe, economical, and sustainable way of carbon capture and storage. This paper introduces the carbon fixation mechanism of ferromagnesian minerals and analyzes their carbon fixation capacity and potential based on the large reserves of ferromagnesian tailings from the Suoluogou Gold Mine in Sichuan, where the proportion of CaO,MgO,FeO and other components that can fixate CO2 is high.It is estimated that the current carbon storage capacity of the Suoluogou tailings is as high as 1.64 million tons, and the average annual CO2 storage capacity in the future is estimated to be about 120 000 t based on the current production efficiency. At least 2.46 million tons of CO2 can be stored for the future production of tailings.Referring to the ERW method, ferromagnesian minerals can be further separated from the Suoluogou tailings and sprayed on farmland for natural weathering and consumption of CO2,which will greatly reduce the cost of CO2 storage by promoting comprehensive utilization of tailings.
