Investigation and assessment of environmental pollution at an industrial site of a gold mine in Gansu

Abstract: A gold mine in Gansu is located in an alpine meadow area. The long-term operation of its industrial site may affect the surrounding pasture and grassland environment. The high-resolution electromagnetic method and RTK geophysical exploration technology were adopted to carry out hydrogeological surveys on 5 profiles around the tailings pond and assess the pollution status. Meanwhile, 13 soil sampling points, 4 groundwater sampling points, and 1 control point were set up to investigate the environmental pollution around the site. The results show that the soil pH in the survey area is weakly alkaline, with the arsenic over-standard rate of 81.82 % and the maximum over-standard multiple of 3.4 times. The cause of arsenic over-standard is related to the high geochemical background value of arsenic in soil, and dust deposition and leachate further accelerate arsenic concentration in surrounding soil, acting as important inducing factors for arsenic over-standard at partial sampling points. In the groundwater upstream of the site, iron and manganese exceed the standards, while the detected values of other pollution factors are all lower than the standard limits. This study provides basic data for site restoration.
